Softball Falls in Extras; Fends off Henderson State to Split

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.  – The Harding softball team split a Great American Conference doubleheader at Henderson State Friday. The Reddies took game one 2-1 in eight innings and Harding fended off Henderson State's comeback in game two to win 9-7.

Harding moves to 31-19 overall and 23-15 in the GAC.

Henderson State moves to 24-26 overall and 18-20 in the GAC.

 

Game One Key Innings (Henderson State 2, Harding 1 – 8 Innings)

-         Henderson State got on the board in the second when Ashleigh Erb hit a solo home run to left center.

-         Harding tied the game in the top of the third when Kyndal Pirtle scored on an error.

-         The Reddies got the walkoff win in the eighth when Selena Mendoza singled in Monica Monreal.

Game One Key Statistics

-         Henderson State had 11 hits and left 10 runners on base.

-         Harding had four hits led by Kyndal Pirtle who went 2-for-4.

-         Peyton Mills got her 109th career stolen base in the game which ties Courtney Derrick for the school record.

-         Michelle Sorensen got the win for Henderson State to improve to 10-7. She threw the complete game and had 11 strikeouts.

-         Jenna Hipp received the loss and falls to 14-6 on the season. She threw 7 1/3 innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out five.

 

Game Two Key Innings (Harding 9, Henderson State 7)

-         Briley Feringa gave Harding the lead in the top of the first when she hit a two-run home run to left center. It was her eighth of the season.

-         The Lady Bisons got two more runs on three hits in the second inning. Lindsey Duncan hit a single up the middle with the bases loaded that scored two runs.

-         Henderson State got on the board in the third when Abbie Moore hit a sacrifice fly that scored Madie Green.

-         Ashleigh Erb hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning for the Reddies to pull within two, 4-2.

-         Harding got two more runs in the fifth off of two hits. Madison Leggett doubled in a run and Aidan Nichols reached on fielder's choice that scored Lauren Bazan.

-         The Lady Bisons scored three runs on two hits in the seventh to lead 9-2. Amanda Fields led off the inning with a solo home run. It was her ninth of the season. Lauren Bazan hit a triple that drove in Hanna Jones and Aidan Nichols had a RBI groundout.

-         Henderson State scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh off three home runs.

Game Two Key Statistics

-         Harding tied a season-high with 14 hits with Lauren Bazan going 3-for-4. Four other Lady Bisons had two hits.

-         Henderson State had nine hits led by Madie Green and Ashleigh Erb who each had two.

-         Emma Dwyer got the win for Harding to improve to 3-5 on the season. She pitched three innings of relief and struck out three.

-         Emily Garrett got her second save of the season pitching 2/3 innings.

-         Michelle Sorensen received the loss and falls to 10-8 on the season. She pitched two innings gave up four earned runs and struck out three.

Next Up

-          The two teams will wrap up their series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
