Harding Bats Hot, Not in Doubleheader Split

SEARCY – An historic offensive performance from Harding's Nolan Fertig and a shutout pitching performance from Southwestern Oklahoma's Tyler Tuck led to a doubleheader split between the two teams Friday in Great American Conference action at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding won the opener 9-2 with Southwestern winning game two 4-0. The final game of the series is Saturday at 12 p.m. There will be a pregame ceremony at 11:30 a.m. to dedicate Harding's new flagpole to former head coach and World War II veteran Dick Johnson.

Harding moved to 22-14 overall and 13-10 with the split. The Bisons are part of a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Southwestern is 16-17 overall and 12-11 in conference, one game back and in seventh place. The top six teams advance to the GAC Tournament in May.

GAME 1
Fertig became only the second Harding player ever to hit two home runs as part of a four-hit game at Jerry Moore Field. The other was Adam Darby, who went 4-for-5 with two home runs against Henderson State in 2009.

In the first, with Harding trailing 2-0, Fertig singled and scored on David Butterfield's infield single. He hit a two-run home run to right in the second giving the Bisons a 3-2 lead. It was all Harding from there.

Fertig had an RBI single in the third and hit his second home run with one out in the fifth. It was his first four-hit game of the season and second of his career. It was also his first multi-HR game at Harding. He was the third different Bison to hit two home runs in a game this season, joining Luke Van Dover and Miles Humphreys, who hit two each against Southeastern Oklahoma.

Tanner Smith (5-4) limited Southwestern to only six hits and two unearned runs, pitching his first career nine-inning complete game.

Harding had 15 hits, one short of its season high, and every starter had at least one hit. Humphreys and Butterfield had two hits each.

GAME 2
Tuck (5-2) pitched his second straight seven-inning complete game shutout in game two. He allowed hits from Harding's Humphreys, Butterfield and Cody Smith, all singles.

Harding starter Logan McCall (1-3) worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the third but surrendered a solo home run to Tanner Long as part of a two-run fourth for Southwestern. The Bulldogs had a double and a triple in the fifth and added two more runs.

The one-hour, 32-minute game was Harding's shortest of the season.
