ENID, Okla. – Harding junior right-hander
Ryder Yakel recently received first-team All-Great American Conference honors as a relief pitcher. Monday at the GAC Tournament, he showed why.
Entering in the seventh inning, Yakel did not allow a hit and struck out five of the 12 batters he faced as Harding posted three runs in the 10th inning to defeat Arkansas Tech 13-10.
Harding (33-20) will play Arkansas-Monticello Tuesday at noon with the winner advancing to meet Oklahoma Baptist at 3:30 p.m. If Harding wins both games, the Bisons would play Oklahoma Baptist again Wednesday at noon for the championship.
Harding has 33 wins this season, the fourth-highest total in program history and the most since the 2011 team won 42 games.
With the score tied at 10-10, Harding junior
Eric Hansen, limited to only 20 at-bats this season due to injuries, laced a double to lead off the inning.
Cody Smith pinch ran for Hansen and reached third on
Jack Thomas's bunt.
Brendan Perrett walked to load the bases, and
Nolan Fertig produced the eventual game-winning RBI with a ground out to the right side.
Harding tacked on a pair of additional runs in the inning. Thomas scored on a Tech throwing error and
Connor Kelly's fourth hit of the game drove in Perrett.
In the bottom of the 10th, Yakel (7-2) set the Wonder Boys down in order, just as he had in his three previous innings.
Harding trailed 10-7 after six innings, but posted three in the seventh to tie the game.
Luke Van Dover hit his team-leading seventh home run, and
Ben Brauss and Hansen had run-scoring hits.
Harding led early, taking a 2-0 lead on Brauss's two-run single. Van Dover was one of the two runners to score on the base hit. He reached back with two outs on his 20th double, becoming only the second Harding player with 20 or more doubles in a season.
Tech (29-23) scored all of its runs between the third and fifth innings. The Wonder Boys had six in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Harding had 18 hits, one short of its GAC Tournament record of 19, also against Tech in 2013.
Six different Harding players had multiple hits, led by Kelly, who had his third four-hit game of the season. Brauss and Hansen had three hits each, and
David Butterfield hit his second home run.
Postgame comments from Eric Hansen, Ryder Yakel, & Coach McGaha after tonight's 13-10 victory in 10 innings over Arkansas Tech at the GAC Tournament. #HUBisons
