ALLEN, Texas – Harding men's tennis completed a perfect opening weekend with a stunning upset of 15th-ranked Midwestern State of the Lone Star Conference Saturday.
Harding improved to 3-0 with its 4-3 victory. Midwestern State was the highest-ranked team Harding had even beaten in men's tennis. Harding's only other win over a top-20 team came over 16th-ranked Northwest Missouri State in 2018.
Harding won the doubles point by taking two of the three doubles matches. Alvaro de Lorenzo and Morgan Salvan won 7-6 at No. 1, and Diego Pierola and Luis Tirado won 6-0 at No. 3.
De Lorenzo gave Harding a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles, but Midwestern State knotted the match at 2-2 with wins at No. 4 and No. 1.
Salvan put the Bisons back in front with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3, and 32nd-ranked Dani Ortiz clinched the victory for Harding with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Harding is back in action Wednesday at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
