SAAC Sponsors: A Night With Butch Gardner and Stan Eckwood

On Wednesday, Harding student-athletes gathered in the Rhodes-Reaves Field House for a panel discussion hosted by Harding's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) with former basketball greats Butch Gardner and Stan Eckwood, who recounted their experiences as African American athletes at Harding. Billy Morgan emceed the event.

Butch Gardner's Career Highlights
  • Played in 107 games with a 21.1 points per game average
  • Harding's career leader in scoring (2,255 points) and rebounding (983)
  • Scored more than 500 points and led Harding in scoring all four seasons
  • Scored 30 or more points in a game 11 times
  • Three-time NAIA All-American
  • The only Harding player to earn All-Conference honors four times
  • Three-time AIC scoring champion
Stan Eckwood's Career Highlights
  • Played in 104 games, averaging 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds
  • Fifth at Harding in career rebounds (753) and sixth in scoring (1,593)
  • Set the HU single-season scoring average record at 26.2 points per game in 1978-79
  • Only Harding player ever drafted in the NBA Draft, selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1979
  • Scored 30 or more points in a game 18 times
  • NAIA Honorable Mention All-America in 1978-79
  • Two-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference
  • AIC scoring leader in 1977-78 and 1978-79 seasons
