Evans, Hawley Score 20 in Harding Women's Season-Opening Loss to Emporia State

JOPLIN, Mo. – Junior Jacie Evans and sophomore Sage Hawley both scored 20 points for Harding in an 86-68 season-opening loss to Emporia State Friday in the first game of the GAC/MIAA Challenge, hosted by Missouri Southern State University. Emporia State is a member of the MIAA located in Emporia, Kansas.

Harding (0-1) trailed 57-53 entering the fourth quarter, but Emporia State (1-0) opened the final period on a 14-2 run and pulled away for the victory. The Hornets shot 11 of 14 (78.6%) from the field during the fourth quarter and outscored the Lady Bisons 29-15.

Harding did most of its damage inside, outscoring Emporia State 50-36 in the paint. But the Hornets connected on 12 of 26 3-pointers and held the Lady Bisons to only one made 3-pointer. Harding also struggled at the free-throw line, making only 9 of 25 (36%) at the stripe.

Evans, a native of Norman, Oklahoma, scored 20 or more points for the second time in her career and was just one point off her career high of 21, set at Henderson State last season. She shot 9 of 13 from the field and added eight rebounds.

Hawley, from Memphis, Tennessee, notched 20 points for the third time in her career and led the team with nine rebounds. She was 9 of 17 shooting.

Both teams shot well in the third quarter with Emporia State outscoring Harding 24-20 to lead by four points entering the fourth.

The Hornets shot 10 of 18 in the third period and made four 3-pointers. Harding shot 10 of 21 (47.6%). Evans scored Harding first eight points of the period with Hawley (6 points) and Patricija Peric (4 points) contributing the other 10.

Harding shot 56.3% in the second quarter and limited Emporia State to only 3-of-10 shooting. The Lady Bisons outscored the Hornets 19-10 in the period and went to halftime tied 33-33.
Hawley had eight points in the quarter.

Harding trailed 22-14 after one quarter. Emporia State's Fredricka Sheets made all four of her shot attempts and scored 10 points in the period.

The Lady Bisons drew nine Hornet fouls in the period but made only 4 of 13 free throws.

Karsen Schultz and Tre'Zure Jobe both scored 17 points to lead the Hornets. Emporia State placed five players in double figures.

Harding returns to the court at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center Saturday at 5:30 p.m. to take on host Missouri Southern.
