Harding Men's Basketball Falls to Southern Arkansas in GAC Opener

SEARCY – Harding had three players score 16 or more points but fell 80-62 to Southern Arkansas Thursday in the Great American Conference opener for both teams.

Taylor Currie scored 20 points, Stetson Smithson had 18 and Sam Henderson scored a season-high 16 for Harding, who fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the GAC. Southern Arkansas, the preseason conference favorite, won its fifth straight and improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Southern Arkansas had a 16-point lead early in the second half, but Harding went on an 11-3 run, and Currie's 3-pointer from the top of the key cut the Mulerider advantage to 51-45 with 11:55 to go.

Harding was within eight points at 58-50 with 8:04 left. Southern Arkansas scored the next eight straight points and pulled away, scoring 80 or more points for the fifth straight game.

Southern Arkansas led by as many as 15 points in the first half and took a 37-25 lead into the break.

Currie was 7 of 12 from the field and connected on both of his 3-point attempts. Smithson and Henderson were both 6 of 10 shooting.

The Muleriders had 21 offensive rebounds and outscored the Bisons 20-3 on second-chance points.

Devante Brooks led Southern Arkansas with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
