Slow Start Sinks Harding in Loss at Ouachita

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Sophomore Sage Hawley posted her sixth consecutive double-double but Harding could not overcome Ouachita Baptist's strong shooting start and fell to the Tigers 82-60 Saturday in Great American Conference action at Vining Arena.

"Transition buckets really hurt us from the very beginning and we never really recovered," Harding head coach Tim Kirby said. "Everything we wanted to do in the game, we really did not accomplish and that started from the beginning."

The loss snapped two Harding streaks. The Lady Bisons had won five straight since a season-opening loss to Emporia State and had won nine straight in the series against Ouachita Baptist (2-3, 1-1).

Hawley led Harding with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hannah Collins added 11 points, and Jordan Elder had 10. The Lady Bisons had their best game of the season at the free-throw line, connecting on 18 of 23 (78.3%) but shot only 34% from the field and 2 of 14 from 3-point range.

Harding was out of sorts offensively in the first period and trailed 21-10. The Lady Bisons hit only 4 of 14 shots and had seven turnovers. Four of those turnovers came on the first eight possessions, and Harding trailed 13-3 before the game was four minutes old.

Ouachita led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter. Makayla Miller made her first seven shots and scored 14 points in the first half. Collins had nine points to lead the Lady Bisons in the first half.

Ouachita shot 61% in the second quarter and outscored Harding 26-20 in the period. The Tigers made all three of their 3-point attempts in the period and led 47-31 at halftime.

Using a full-court press in the third quarter, Harding went on a 9-0 run to pull within 55-48. Ouachita answered with five straight points but shot only 33% in the quarter. The Tigers led 62-50 entering the fourth.

Ouachita outscored Harding 20-10 in the fourth. The Tigers had a 45-30 rebound advantage and outscored Harding 46-30 in the paint.

Aspen Thornton, the national leader in scoring, tied for the lead with 22 points for Ouachita. Miller also had 22 points, and Claudia Vanzant added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Harding is back in action next Saturday at Arkansas-Monticello.
