Baseball Bisons Bash Nine Extra-Base Hits, Down Williams Baptist in Opener

SEARCY – Harding hammered out nine extra-base hits, including eight doubles, in a 13-6 victory over Williams Baptist Wednesday in its season opener at Jerry Moore Field.

The Bisons open Great American Conference play this weekend against Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant.

Playing for the first time in 351 days, Harding erased an early deficit with a seven-run fourth inning that included four doubles and a two-run home run from Brendan Perrett, the fifth home run of his career.

Harding's eight doubles were the most ever by the Bisons in a game at Jerry Moore Field and were just two short of the school record of 10 at Arkansas-Monticello in 2010. The Bisons had never had more than six doubles in a home game.

Senior David Butterfield was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. It was the first two-double game of his career.

Perrett was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, with two coming on the home run and two more coming on a single in the eighth.

Connor Kelly and Luke Van Dover both had two hits. Kelly had a double and drove in two runs to eclipse the 100-RBI mark in his career. Van Dover's bloop double in the sixth was the 48th of his career, leaving him three short of Morgan Trotter's school record of 51, set from 2001-04.

Harding used six pitchers with senior Brent Southerland (1-0) picking up the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Bison pitchers allowed only four hits but walked eight and tied a school record with seven hit batters.

Sam Philley led Williams Baptist (1-1) with a 2-for-4 effort. He scored once and drove in a run.

Hunter Taylor started for the Eagles and took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) over three-plus innings.
