Late Tech Surge Sinks Harding

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech shot 59% from the field and pulled away late to defeat Harding 89-76 Monday in Great American Conference Eastern Division action Monday at Tucker Coliseum.

Harding fell to 3-6 overall and in the GAC East. Tech snapped a two-game skid and moved to 6-5 overall and 4-5 in conference.

Harding led 62-61 with 8:18 left when junior James Harris connected on a 3-pointer. Harding scored only one field goal in the next four minutes as Tech went on a 13-2 run. Kevin Howard's dunk with 4:55 left gave the Wonder Boys a 74-64 lead. Tech pulled away late.

"You can sum that game up in two stretches, one in the first half and one in the second half," Harding head coach Jeff Morgan said.

Harding led early, but a 13-0 Tech run over a three-minute stretch gave the Wonder Boys a 19-12 lead. Tech shot 53% from the field in the half led by as many as 12 with 5:02 left in the half.

Harding pulled within five points late in the half, but Tech's Justin Briley made two layups in the last minute to give the Wonder Boys a 41-32 halftime lead.

"They made some extremely tough shots during that run that were back-breakers," Morgan said.

Harding started the second half on a 12-4 run and scored eight straight points to pull within 45-44 on a Ramiro Santiago 3-pointer. Harding tied it at 48-48 on a James Harris baseline 3 and took the lead for the first time in the second half on Santiago's steal and breakaway layup.

Harding had five players score 10 points or more, led by Harris with 18. Stetson Smithson and Santiago both had 15, Romio Harvey had 11 and Tyler Moore scored 10.

Kimani Binder led Tech with 15 points.

Harding returns to the Rhodes-Reaves Field House Thursday to host Southern Arkansas.
