Yakel Leads Harding to Doubleheader Sweep with Win and Save

SEARCY – Harding senior right-hander Ryder Yakel earned the win in game one and the save in game two to help lead the Bisons to a Great American Conference doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma on Sunday at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding won by scores of 9-5 and 7-4 and look to complete the series sweep Monday at 1 p.m.

The Bisons (18-14, 14-12) scored all their runs in two innings in game one. A five-run third inning included a leadoff home run from Luke Van Dover, a two-run triple from Connor Kelly and RBI singles from Harrison Heffley and Cody Smith.

Southwestern (19-12, 15-11) chipped away at the lead off Harding starter Ty Hoecker, scoring one in the fourth and two in the sixth to pull within 5-3.

With one out and one on in the seventh, Hoecker gave way to Yakel, who walked his first batter. Both runners scored with two outs, tying the game at 5-5.

Harding immediately answered with four in the bottom of the seventh. Brendan Perrett's RBI single to left put the Bisons ahead for good. Harding scored a pair of runs on wild pitches with runners at third and added another on David Butterfield's RBI single.

Yakel (4-1) allowed only one baserunner in the last two innings to close the game. He allowed a run on two hits and struck out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Harding had 12 hits, led by Kelly's 3-for-4 effort. He had his 10th double and first triple of the season.

Harding had a precarious 5-4 lead in the fifth inning of game two when Yakel made his second appearance of the day. Southwestern had scored two runs in the inning and had the tying run at second base. Yakel struck out his first batter faced to end the threat and did not allow a hit in the next two innings to earn his sixth save.

The Bisons jumped out to a five-run lead in game two. Harding scored two in the first on Heffley's RBI double and another on Kelly's ground ball.

Michael Chrisman had the second of his career-high tying four hits to drive in a run in the second inning. Butterfield's double scored two more to give the Bisons a 5-0 lead.

Southwestern scored two runs in both the third and fifth innings to close to within one.

Harding put the game away in the sixth on Chrisman's fourth hit, a two-run homer into the pine trees over the right field fence, his fifth of the season.

Andrew Bradshaw started for Harding after missing last week's start. He struck out four in four innings.

Southwestern's Nate Postlethwait (6-2) pitched a complete game, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits over six innings.

Chrisman was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Southwestern had only four hits as a team.
