Weevils Sweep Bisons in Baseball Doubleheader

SEARCY – Arkansas-Monticello took advantage of four Harding errors in game one and a three-run home run from Dylan Borman in game two to sweep the Bisons 4-2 and 3-1 in a Great American Conference doubleheader Saturday at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding fell to 13-9 overall and 10-8 in the GAC and plays at home Tuesday against nonconference opponent University of the Ozarks.

Arkansas-Monticello improved to 9-12 overall and 9-9 in conference.

Harding, who had the highest fielding percentage in the GAC entering the weekend, made an uncharacteristic four errors in the opener that led to three unearned runs for starter Ty Hoecker (2-2).

Harding took a 1-0 lead in the third. David Butterfield singled and later scored on a Harrison Heffley single to left. But errors in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings led to Weevil runs in each frame.

Harding cut the Arkansas-Monticello lead to 3-2 in the seventh. Caleb Stull doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Michael Chrisman's infield single.

UAM tacked on a run in the eighth and held off the Bisons.

River Hunt (5-0) remained undefeated this season, pitching six innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs for the Weevils.

Hoecker yielded eight hits and struck out five.

Cody Smith had two of Harding's six hits. Hudson Hopkins was 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Weevils.

Harding again took an early lead in game two, scoring in the bottom of the second. The Bisons had three hits in the inning, including a two-out double from Chris Witzke. He scored on Stull's single to center.

Arkansas-Monticello did all its damage in the fourth. Andrew Piraino walked to lead off the inning, and Jordan Johnson followed that with a double. Two batters later, Borman hit a home run into the wind in left center, his third home run of the season.

The Bisons did not have another hit against Arkansas-Monticello starter Colby Adkins (1-1) until the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the game.

Witzke had two of Harding's five hits in game two, including his fifth double of the season.

Carter McCall (0-1) made his first start of the season for the Bisons and went 3 1/3 innings, striking out four. Dylan Adcock pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
