Harding Baseball Drops Series Opener at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech's Jonathon Arrieta homered twice to lead the Wonder Boys to a 13-3 victory over the Harding baseball team Friday in Great American Conference action at Tech Field. The series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Tech (22-13, 19-9) scored four in the second and five in the fifth to open a 9-0 lead.

Harding (19-16, 14-14) plated all three of its runs in the sixth. With one out Michael Chrisman laced his ninth double of the season, the first of four straight Harding hits. David Butterfield singled before Harrison Heffley drove in Chrisman with a single, and Connor Kelly brought Butterfield home with another single.

Tech scored two more in the bottom of the sixth and ended the game in the seventh with two more runs.

Chrisman continued his recent success at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. It was his 11th multiple-hit game in his last 13 games and his team-leading 19th multiple-hit game of the season. He now has a team-best .412 batting average.

Butterfield's sixth-inning single extended his on-base streak to 23 games. Heffley drove in a run for the fifth time in Harding's last six games, and Kelly notched his eighth RBI in the last five games.

Ty Hoecker (3-4) started for the Bisons on the mound. He surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Hoecker only walked one and threw 66 of his 95 pitches for strikes. Carter McCall (0.2 IP, 1 ER) and Brent Southerland (1.0 IP, 4 ER) pitched out of the pen for Harding.

Patrick Miner (7-2) got all but the final out of the game for the Wonder Boys. He had a season-high 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings and had no walks for the second straight start.

Harding entered the weekend in eighth place in the GAC standings with the top eight teams qualifying for the conference tournament. The Bisons had a magic number of four, with any combination of Harding wins and Ouachita Baptist losses equaling four qualifying the black and gold for the tournament. That number is down to three after Friday due to Ouachita's 10-3 loss to Henderson State.
