The Harding men's tennis team lost to No. 23-ranked Northwest Missouri State 4-0 on Saturday May 1 at the Edmond Center Court in Edmond, Oklahoma in the semifinals of the MIAA/GAC Tournament. It was the first time all season that the Bisons (9-7, 3-1) have been swept.
The Bisons got off to a good start with
Arthur Bellan and
Dani Ortiz winning their 10
th doubles match of the season at No. 2, 6-2. The Bearcats then took the next two matches to secure the doubles point and take the early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats won the first three singles matches to take the sweep and secure their spot in the MIAA/GAC Tournament Championship. Ortiz fell to the No. 6-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, Andrea Zamurri, at No. 1, 2-6, 1-6. Bellan fell at No. 2 in straight sets, 3-6, 3-6.
Bryce Walker also fell in straight sets at No. 6, 2-6, 3-6. With the match clinched all other matches were stopped. Alvaro de Lorenzo was the only Bison leading in the remaining matches after winning the first set 7-5.
The Bisons will now wait to see if they will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament when the field is announced on May 4 at 8 p.m. The top four teams will qualify for the Central Regional Tournament. The Bisons were ranked fourth in the latest Regional Rankings released on Wednesday April 28.
