Board Work Leads Harding to Victory in GAC Opener

SEARCY – On a night where Harding struggled from long range and at the free-throw line, the Lady Bisons used their might inside to pull out a 66-51 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Thursday at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. It was the Great American Conference opener for both teams.

Harding won its fifth straight and moved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Lady Bisons defeated the Tigers for the 11th time in the last 12 meetings. Ouachita fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference.

Harding, the leading rebounding team in the GAC, held a 54-27 advantage on the boards and had 27 offensive rebounds. The Lady Bisons had trouble at the line, shooting 19 of 37 (48%), but no trouble inside, outscoring the Tigers 38-14 in the paint.

Leading by only six entering the fourth quarter, Harding made its first three 3-pointers of the game and held Ouachita to only 21% shooting to pull away.

Sophomore Rory Geer had 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Lady Bisons. She was 6 of 8 shooting and made all five of her free throws.

Junior Sage Hawley had 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Sophomore Aubrey Isbell recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Senior Jacie Evans added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Harding went on a 14-0 run early in the game, holding Ouachita scoreless for more than five minutes. The Lady Bisons led 19-11 after one quarter.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter. Harding shot 20% and missed all seven 3-point attempts, and Ouachita made only 2 of 12 shots in the quarter and had six turnovers.

Harding led 30-21 at the break and outrebounded Ouachita 31-14. Rory Geer made 5 of 6 from the field, while the rest of the team was 4 of 23. Ouachita did not have a player with more than one bucket in the first half.
