Harding Holds Off Southern Nazarene to Stay in Second Place

SEARCY – Harding weathered a late Southern Nazarene rally and won its fifth straight home game 78-75 Thursday in Great American Conference women's basketball action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

The Lady Bisons, who entered the game in second place in the GAC, one-half game ahead of the Crimson Storm, improved to 16-6 overall and 12-5 in conference. Southern Nazarene had a seven-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the GAC.

Hannah Collins made two free throws with 1:47 left to put Harding ahead 74-64. Collins fouled out on Southern Nazarene's next possession, and the Crimson Storm press forced several turnovers with Collins on the bench.

Southern Nazarene's Jaycee Soap hit made consecutive 3-pointers, and Abby Niehues made a layup with 25 seconds left to cut Harding's lead to 76-75.

The Crimson Storm fouled Lexie Davis with 16 seconds left, and Davis made both free throws.

Southern Nazarene tried to get Soap a 3-pointer on its last possession, but Harding blocked her attempt from the deep right wing to win the game.

Sage Hawley led five Lady Bisons in double figures with 17 points and 12 rebounds, her 13th double-double of the season. Collins and Aubrey Isbell had 13 points each, and Jordan Elder and Davis both scored 10.

Soap made six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points. Cassandra Awatt added 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Harding, winners of eight of its last nine games, was only the sixth team to score more than 70 points against Southern Nazarene this season.

Harding made 5 of its last 7 shots in the first quarter and led 22-17 after one. Isbell made all four of her shot attempts and scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes.

Southern Nazarene hit 58% from the field in the second quarter and outscored Harding 20-13 to take a 37-35 lead at the break.

Soap had 14 points for the Crimson Storm in the first half, connecting on three of Southern Nazarene's five 3-pointers.

Hawley scored on consecutive possessions midway through the third quarter to put Harding ahead 45-43. It was part of a 16-4 run that pushed Harding to a 55-47 lead with 2:25 left. The Bisons led 58-52 after three quarters.

The Lady Bisons play the second of their two-game home stand Saturday against Oklahoma Baptist.
