Harding Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Five, Sweeps Friday Doubleheader

SEARCY – Harding swept both games of a doubleheader Friday against McKendree to start a season with five straight wins for the first time since 2013. The Bisons took a big lead early in game one and held on for a 9-6 win and came from behind to win game two 6-5.

Harding and McKendree, a member of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference, conclude the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jerry Moore Field.

GAME 1 | Harding 9, McKendree 6
Harding took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to its win in the opener.

Senior Carter McCall (1-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Harding (4-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out six. Senior Dylan Adcock pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Junior Coulton Doyle led the way offensively for the Bisons, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Senior Chris Witzke went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and senior David Butterfield also chipped in, going 2-for-3 for Harding with a double, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Harding plated two runs off of McKendree pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Doyle.

The Bisons then held the Bearcats scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Harding brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Witzke's single, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Bisons.

Harding kept McKendree without a run before building their lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. The Bisons added two to their tally on Doyle's two-run homer to left, his third home run of the season.

The Bearcats closed the gap to 6-2, but Harding added some insurance in the seventh. The Bisons scored three times, picking up one on an RBI base knock off the bat of senior Cody Smith, bringing the Harding advantage to 9-2. McKendree put four runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Bisons held on for the 9-6 win.

GAME NOTES
» Witzke compiled three hits in the game for Harding, his sixth career game with three hits or more.
» McCall struck out six Bearcat hitters, one short of his career high.
» Five Bisons had multiple hits in the ballgame and Harding's 13 hits were a season high
» Harding went 5-for-14 (.357) with runners in scoring position.
» Harding pitchers faced 45 McKendree hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out a season-high 10.
» McKendree was led offensively by senior Alex Steinbach, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI.
» McKendree starter Logan Boente (0-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in two innings.
» Sophomore Mark Branz led the Bearcats pitching staff, throwing one shutout inning.

GAME 2 | Harding 6, McKendree 5
Trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, Harding plated three in the third and three more in the fourth to come from behind and win game two.

Sophomore Maddox Long (1-0) got the win for Harding. The right-hander went four innings, giving up five runs, one earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Senior Joey Lawhorn also pitched well, going three shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one for his first save.

In the batter's box, Butterfield went 1-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBIs. Witzke went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior Michael Deward added a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-0, the Bisons first put runs on the board in the third inning. Witzke's run-scoring single was the big hit in Harding's three-run inning.

The Bisons kept the deficit at 5-3 before taking the lead in the fourth. Harding scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Butterfield, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Bisons.

Lawhorn faced only one over the minimum in the last three innings.

GAME NOTES
» The Bisons out-hit the Bearcats at a 7-5 clip.
» Harding went 4-for-11 (.364) with runners in scoring position.
» Harding pitchers faced 29 McKendree hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out four.
» Butterfield extended his on-base streak to 34 games.
» McKendree was led offensively by freshman Gavin Arseneau, who went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs.
» Senior Luke Vallandingham took the loss, allowing two earned runs in three innings of relief.
