Baseball Bisons Drop GAC Doubleheader at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding junior Michael Dewald had five hits, including a double, Sunday in a Great American Conference doubleheader at Henderson State, but the Bisons fell 4-0 and 10-6 in games played at Clyde Berry Field. The teams conclude the series Monday at 1 p.m.

Harding dropped to 10-9 overall and 4-7 in GAC games, and Henderson State, ranked No. 16 nationally, improved to 17-2 overall and 9-2 in conference.

Game 1 – Henderson St. 4, Harding 0
Two Henderson State pitchers combined to throw a four-hit shutout in game one.

Dewald had two of the four hits, including his team-leading seventh double in the second inning. Dewald's one out single with David Butterfield on first in the fourth innings was Harding's lone hit with runners on base.

Harding was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Bisons got a strong start from Carter McCall (2-1). He matched his season high by pitching seven innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with a season-high tying six strikeouts. Freshman Kyle Lane pitched a scoreless eighth in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Henderson State plated three runs in the first on a two-run double and a sacrifice fly. A solo home run in the fourth accounted for the Reddies' final run.

GAME NOTES
•    Harding pitchers limited Henderson State to just 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.
•    Dewald notched his fifth multi-hit game of the season … he also extended his hitting streak to six games and his on-base streak to eight games.
•    Cody Smith and Owen Martin also had hits for the Bisons … Smith's single extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine games and his on-base streak to 14 games.

Game 2 – Henderson St. 10, Harding 6
Harding took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, but Henderson State scored seven unanswered runs to come back and win the game.

Dewald and Smith both had three hits. Smith scored twice, and Dewald drove in two runs.

Joel Barker started and allowed five runs (three earned) over five innings with four strikeouts. Dylan Adcock (1-2) took the loss in relief. He and reliever Davis Welch combined to allow five runs in Henderson State's sixth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Harding led 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth, but Henderson State had a three-run homer and a two-run homer in the inning to take the lead.

Harding took the lead in the first on Smith's solo homer, his first of the season and sixth of his career.

Dewald had an RBI single and scored to account for two of Harding's three runs in the third.

A Henderson State three-run homer in the bottom of the third cut Harding's lead to 4-3.

Harding responded with two runs on three hits in the fourth with Coulton Doyle and Dewald providing run-scoring singles to put the Bisons ahead 6-3.

Henderson State scored two in the fourth to pull within 6-5, then added five more in the sixth on a pair of home runs.

GAME NOTES
•    Smith and Dewald both had their second three-hit game of the season.
•    The Bisons outhit the Reddies 10-8 and dropped to 7-4 this season in the 11 games they outhit their opponent.
•    Harding went 5-for-13 (.385) with runners in scoring position.
•    Smith extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 15 games.
