Harding Season Ends at GAC Tournament Semifinals

SHAWNEE, Okla. – No. 3 seed Harding suffered a cold shooting fourth quarter and fell 68-65 to No. 7 seed Arkansas Tech Saturday in the semifinals of the Great American Conference Tournament at FireLake Arena.

The loss ended Harding's season with a 19-10 overall record. Tech (16-12) advanced to meet No. 1 seed Southwestern Oklahoma in Sunday's tournament final.

A 7-0 run early in the third quarter gave Harding a 35-26 lead. The Lady Bisons led by nine again at 39-30 on a Hawley turnaround jumper.

Tech cut into the Harding lead and a Nikki Metcalfe baseline jumper at the buzzer knotted the game at 50-50 entering the final quarter.

Kaley Shipman hit a jumper on Tech's first possession of the fourth quarter to give the Golden Suns their first lead since late in the second quarter.

Harding retook the lead at 54-52 when Collins eluded a Tech defender and scooped in a layup with 7:13 left.

Tech missed six straight shots before Sanders made a reverse layup with 6:21 left to cut Harding's lead to 55-54.

The Golden Suns retook the lead on Shipman's layup. Tech led 58-57 with 4:28 left. Shipman's bucket was part of a 10-2 run. Harding's Collins made a jumper on the baseline with 2:58 remaining.

The Lady Bisons did not make another shot until Collins made a shot with just under six seconds remaining. Tech made six free throws in the final three minutes to hold off Harding.

Hawley led Harding with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. Freshman Aubrey Isbell added 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting. Collins had eight points and nine rebounds.

Shipman and Sanders had 17 points each to lead Tech.

Harding missed its first six shots and trailed 7-0 with 6:19 left in the first quarter.

Hawley hit an elbow jumper out of a timeout for Harding's first points. Isbell checked in and hit a 3. Hawley with a putback layup that tied the game at 7-7.

Lexie Davis hit Jordan Elder with full-court pass, and Elder eluded a defender and made a layup to give Harding its first lead at 11-9 with 2:50 left.

After the slow start, Harding outscored Arkansas Tech 14-4 over the rest of the period and led 14-11 after one.

With 4:25 left in the second quarter, Harding maintained a 22-19 lead.

Tech retook the lead 23-22 with 2:38 left in the quarter when Sanders recovered a loose ball in the lane and muscled in a layup.

Harding responded with a layup from Hawley and a jumper in the lane by Isbell. Another Isbell bucket in the lane with 59 seconds left gave Harding a 28-25 lead at the break.
