Harding Bashes Eight Homers in Doubleheader Sweep at Southwestern Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Harding took full advantage of 30 mph wind gusts Friday in a Great American Conference doubleheader at Southwestern Oklahoma's Athletic Complex.

Harding scored 37 runs on 41 hits in the doubleheader sweep, blasting Southwestern Oklahoma 17-7 in game one and 20-3 in game two. Only once since Harding joined the NCAA in 1997 have the Bisons scored more runs or had more hits in a doubleheader. The teams conclude the series tomorrow at noon.

Both records came against University of the Ozarks in 1999, when Harding won 36-10 and 15-13 in a doubleheader, with 49 hits in the two games.

With the victories, Harding improved to 27-15 overall and 17-12 in the GAC.

Harding trailed 6-4 in the opener before a six-run fifth inning put the Bisons ahead for good. Four more Harding runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth ended the game early due to the NCAA's 10-run rule.

Harding had 17 hits, including 11 for extra bases. Cody Smith tripled and homered twice in the game for the first time in his career, and was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. Caleb Stull hit a grand slam in the fifth, his first home run of the season, and had five RBIs. Chris Witzke had two doubles to extend his school-record hitting streak to 21 games, and Michael Dewald had a double and a triple in a three-hit effort. Drew McNeel also had three hits.

Harding had three triples in a game for the first time this season and only the sixth time in program history.

Carter McCall (5-2) went the distance on the mound for Harding to earn the win. He pitched eight innings and did not surrender a walk, striking out four.

The extra-base hit barrage continued in game two as Harding scored seven runs in both the third and sixth innings.

Harding had four doubles and five home runs, with four-baggers coming from David Butterfield, Smith (his third of the day), Dewald, Owen Martin and Caleb Barger (the first of his career).

Butterfield was 4-for-6 with a career-high four runs and four RBIs. It was the four four-hit game of his career. Coulton Doyle was also 4-for-6, scored twice and drove in one. It was his second four-hit game of the season. Martin had a career-high five RBIs.

A three-hit game from Witzke extended his hitting streak to 22 games. Dewald and Stull also had three hits.

Harding's 24-hit effort tied for second in a single game and was the most since the Bisons had 24 hits against Southern Arkansas in 2013.

Harding received outstanding pitching in game two from starter Joel Barker (9-2). He allowed only two hits and no earned runs over six innings with seven strikeouts against only one walk.

Barker became only the fifth Harding pitcher ever with nine or more wins in a season and the first since Collin Campbell went 9-2 in 2014. Only Justin Phillips (2007) and John Kodatt (1989) have won 10.

Harding managed 20 extra-base hits in the doubleheader. Southwestern Oklahoma had four, all doubles.
