Perrett, Martin Homer in Harding Loss to SAU

SEARCY – Brendan Perrett and Owen Martin both hit solo home runs, and Harding received outstanding starting pitching from Carter McCall Friday in a 17-7 loss to 11th-ranked Southern Arkansas in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Jerry Moore Field.

The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Harding dropped to 21-13 overall and 12-10 in the GAC. After Friday's action, the Bisons are tied with Oklahoma Baptist for fifth in the GAC standings.

Harding took advantage of a Southern Arkansas error in the first to score three unearned runs. Perrett hit his first home run of the season in the second inning to give Harding a 4-0 lead.

Senior Carter McCall was strong on the mound for the Bisons. He pitched six innings and allowed only one earned run on five hits with a career-high eight strikeouts. Harding's four pitchers combined to strike out 12 Muleriders.

Southern Arkansas did not score until the fifth inning.

Harding tacked on two in the sixth on Coulton Doyle's two-run double to left that gave Harding a 6-3 lead.

The Muleriders scored 14 runs over the next three innings.

Martin's home run, his second of the season, came in the bottom of the eighth.

Doyle, who had two doubles, and David Butterfield each had two hits. It was Doyle's 12th multi-hit game of the season and Butterfield's 11th. Butterfield extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Chris Witzke went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
