Harding Baseball Season Ends at GAC Tournament

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The 2022 Harding baseball season came to an end Monday with a 17-3 loss to Ouachita Baptist on the third day of the Great American Conference Tournament at Majestic Park.

The Bisons opened the tournament with a 6-2 loss to Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday and won 4-2 over Arkansas-Monticello late Sunday night.

Harding, selected eighth in the GAC preseason coaches' poll, finished the season 32-19. The Bisons went 21-12 in conference games, the most conference wins in the history of the program, and finished third in the GAC regular season standings.

Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, Harding senior David Butterfield walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch. Butterfield scored the first of Harding's two runs in the bottom of the eighth. He singled to lead off the inning and came home on Drew McNeel's ground out. Cody Smith singled and scored the third Harding run.

Ouachita scored in each of the first five innings and led 12-1 at that point.

Harding used seven pitchers in the game, including Maddox Long (2.0 IP), Ross Shirey (1.0 IP), Dylan Adcock (1.1 IP, 1 K), Davis Welch (2.1 IP, 2 K), Billy Johnston, Javier Lobo (1.1 IP) and Luke Johnson (1.0 IP).

Butterfield and Smith each had two hits. It was Butterfield's 15th multi-hit game of the season and Smith's 17th.

It was the final game in the careers of 11 Harding seniors.
