Hawley Hits Game-Winner, HU Wins at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Junior Sage Hawley hit a jumper with 46 seconds left to lift Harding to a 66-65 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday in Great American women's basketball action at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The victory was Harding's seventh straight and pushed the Lady Bisons to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the GAC. The team will play again at home Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Henderson State. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but has been moved to Thursday with Harding's football team playing for the national championship Saturday in McKinney, Texas.

Harding and Southern Nazarene are the only 3-0 conference teams remaining. Arkansas-Monticello dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the GAC. It was the Lady Bisons' seventh straight victory over the Blossoms.

Harding led 63-57 after Aubrey Isbell hit a 3-pointer with 4:23 left. UAM chipped away and tied the game at 63 on a layup with 2:53 left. The Lady Bisons regained the lead on a Hawley free throw with 2:10 remaining, but two UAM free throws at the 1:57 mark put the Blossoms ahead 65-64.

Following a Harding turnover, Arkansas-Monticello missed its next attempt, and Hawley grabbed the rebound. Twelve seconds later she hit what turned out to be the game-winning shot. Officials whistled UAM for a charging foul on its next possession, but an ensuing Harding turnover gave UAM one last shot at the buzzer that missed.

Freshman Josie Williams led Harding in scoring with 16 points, connecting on 6-of-6 from the foul line. Hawley had 14 and a team-leading seven rebounds, and Isbell added 12 points.

Harding made only 1 of 12 shots in the second quarter but stayed in the game by hitting all eight of its free throws in the period. UAM led 28-24 at halftime.

The Lady Bisons shot a scorching 64% (9 of 14) in the third quarter and led 49-46 entering the fourth.
