Strong Start, Strong Starting Pitching Leads HU Baseball to Win at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. – Harding jumped out on Southeastern Oklahoma State early, and starting pitcher Maddox Long took care of the rest.

The Bisons took game one of a three game Great American Conference series 6-1 Friday. The teams conclude the series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Harding won its fourth straight game in Durant and improved to 26-13 overall and 13-12 in conference. Southeastern Oklahoma had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 20-19 overall and 12-13 in conference.

Harding took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Cody Smith was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and came around to score on a Southeastern throwing error. The big blow of the inning was a three-run blast from Collin Helms, his fourth home run of the season.

The leadoff man scored again for Harding in the third inning. Seth Johnson led off the frame with a walk, moved to third on Coulton Doyle's single and scored on another single by Sebastian Martinez to make it 5-0 in favor of the Bisons.

Johnson led off the fifth with his 10th home run of the season, only the 10th time in program history Harding had a player with 10 or more home runs. Doyle was the last to do it with 12 home runs last season.

Doyle, Martinez and Logan Lacey had three hits each, with Doyle extending his on-base streak to 36 games.

Long (7-2) started and went eight strong innings, allowing only four hits and striking out seven, his best start of the season. The only blemish on his day was a solo home run by Seth Morrow with one out in the seventh.

Dylan Penick pitched a perfect ninth to end the game.
