Lock-down Defense in OT sends #13 Harding Past Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Harding held Oklahoma Baptist to only one basket in overtime and won 65-61 on Saturday at Noble Center in Great American Conference women's basketball action.

The victory boosted No. 13 Harding to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference. Oklahoma Baptist fell to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in conference. Harding has won 10 straight in the series.

Sage Hawley broke a 54-54 tie with a jump hook in the lane with 1:35 left in regulation. After a missed Oklahoma Baptist shot, Harding regained possession but could not score. Oklahoma Baptist tied it again at 56-56 with 15.7 seconds left and the game went into overtime.

Hawley's jump hook with 3:53 left gave HU a 58-56 lead. Josie Williams then gave the Lady Bisons a 60-56 lead on a 15-foot jumper with 3:14 remaining.

Aubrey Isbell nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:20 left to push HU's lead to 63-56. Oklahoma Baptist answered with a 3-pointer to trim the advantage back to four points, the team's only basket in the overtime period. Maddie Holt made a free throw with 16.9 left, and Harding led 64-59. Oklahoma Baptist made two free throws to cut it to three points, but Williams made a free throw with just over one second left to seal it.

Kendrick Bailey made four 3-pointers and led Harding with a career-high 16 points. Williams and Isbell had 10 each. Hawley had eight points and 11 rebounds. Rory Geer had five points, eight rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Harding scored the last nine points of the second quarter and led Oklahoma Baptist 30-27 at halftime.

The Lady Bisons shot on 2-of-14 in the first quarter and trailed 14-11 after the first 10 minutes. Harding's shooting improved in the second quarter. The Lady Bisons shot 50% in the period and had 3-pointers from Tate Wells and Williams.

Williams' 3-pointer was part of Harding's run to close the half. The run also included two free throws from Bailey and layups from Williams and Harley Harbour.

Three of Harding's four field goals in the third quarter were 3-pointers, but the Lady Bisons were only 1-of-9 from inside the arc and led only 44-43 entering the fourth. Oklahoma Baptist shot 64% in the period.

Harding's next action is Thursday, Jan. 18 against Southwestern Oklahoma at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.

  • The overtime victory was Harding's sixth straight dating back to a 75-71 win at Arkansas Tech on Jan. 16, 2020.
  • Harding shot 30.4% from the field, its lowest field goal percentage in a win since shooting 27.3% in a 66-63 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 6, 2021.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Sage Hawley had 11 rebounds and passed HU Hall of Famer Bridget Benson for fourth in career rebounds.
  • Bailey had scored 15 points five times in her career before setting her career high with 16 points against Oklahoma Baptist.
SERIES NOTES
  • Harding leads the series 15-3 overall and 7-2 in Shawnee … HU has won 14 of the last 15 meetings between the teams.
