WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Two days after the 100th anniversary of the first Harding football game, the No. 1-ranked Bisons, running an offense scheme not that different from the 1924 team, showed how far the program has come by winning its NCAA-leading 24th consecutive game with a 57-3 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday in Great American Conference action at Flex-Chem Field.
Harding's high-powered offense racked up 393 rushing yards and 523 total yards, with seven different players scoring touchdowns. It was Harding's fifth straight game scoring more than 50 points and seventh straight with more than 500 total yards. The Bisons' defense held Southwestern Oklahoma to just 73 yards on the ground and 22 yards through the air, the eighth-fewest passing yards ever by a Harding opponent and the 12th-fewest total yards.
The Bisons struck quickly, scoring on their opening drive. Braden Jay returned the opening kickoff 44 yards to the Harding 49-yard line, setting up a 9-play, 51-yard drive capped by Cole Keylon's 4-yard touchdown run.
After a blocked punt recovered by Jordan Mays in the end zone, Harding extended its lead to 13-0.
In the second quarter, Keylon connected with Darius Brown for a 53-yard touchdown pass, and later added a 26-yard touchdown run to put Harding up 26-0.
Southwestern Oklahoma's only score came on a 24-yard field goal by Ethan McBee midway through the second quarter.
Keylon continued to shine in the second half, throwing a 54-yard touchdown pass to Jay and leading the Bisons to a 36-3 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, Harding's Jhalen Spicer rushed for 12 yards to the Southwestern Oklahoma 27-yard line, setting up Cole Keylon's 14-yard touchdown pass to Spicer.
The Bisons' dominance continued in the fourth quarter, with Andrew Miller scoring on a 7-yard run. Kyler Finney added a 4-yard touchdown run with 5:38 remaining, capping off a 62-yard rush to the Southwestern Oklahoma 4-yard line.
Keylon led the Bisons' offense, completing 4 of 5 passes for 130 yards and a career-high tying three touchdowns, and rushing for two additional scores. Finney, making his Harding debut, added 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Miller chipped in 43 yards and a score.
The Bisons' defense was equally impressive, recording three sacks and limiting Southwestern Oklahoma to just 3 points after a failed on-side kick. Gage Price led the defensive charge with three tackles for loss, including a sack. Cayden Pierce had a team-high nine tackles, including two for losses.
With the win, Harding improves to 5-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Southwestern fell to 2-3 overall and in conference. The Bisons return home next Saturday to take on Northwestern Oklahoma.
