Bisons Struggle from Three, Fall to UAFS in Season Opener

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Despite a strong debut from transfer Josh Denton, Harding fell short in its season opener, losing 91-83 to Arkansas-Fort Smith in the Central Region Challenge at Little Rock Christian. Denton scored a team-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the balanced attack of the Lions, led by Terrell Williams, Jr.'s 19 points, as six UAFS players reached double figures.

Denton, who transferred from Arkansas-Monticello, shot 9-of-13 from the field and led the Bisons with 25 points and five rebounds. Stetson Smithson added 13 points and six rebounds, while Keyln McBride chipped in 13 points and four assists.

Harding led 21-20 with 8:13 left in the first half, but Arkansas-Fort Smith scored the next seven points and never trailed again. The Lions took a 45-43 lead into halftime and pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 15 points.

The Bisons struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 22.2% (6-of-27) from three-point range. Harding also committed 16 turnovers, which Arkansas-Fort Smith converted into 21 points.

The Bisons will look to bounce back on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Rogers State in their second Central Region Challenge game.
