Baseball Bisons Extend Winning Streak with Two Victories Over Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. (AP) — Harding University's baseball team continued its winning streak with a Great American Conference doubleheader sweep against Southern Nazarene at Feland Field on Saturday. The Bisons secured a 5-2 victory in 10 innings in the first game and followed it up with a 7-2 win in the second.

In the opener, Michael Dewald's crucial RBI double and a four-base error by Southern Nazarene contributed to Harding tying the game 2-2. The Bisons then exploded for three runs in the 10th inning, led by Cooper Newsom's sacrifice fly, which ultimately sealed the win.

Starting pitcher Davis Welch delivered six solid innings, allowing only two runs in the first inning. Griffin Meeker's three scoreless innings earned him the win, supported by Kyle Lane's save in the final frame.

In the second game, Harding took an early lead with a run in the first inning, courtesy of Newsom's RBI single. The Bisons capitalized on Southern Nazarene's defensive lapses, scoring additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

On the mound, Merritt Jay recorded nine strikeouts over 3.2 innings, while Will Roguske closed out the game effectively, not allowing a hit and striking out four over the final 3.1 innings and earning the win.

Offensively, Newsom and Logan Lacey stood out for Harding, with Newsom going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Lacey delivering a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs.

With the wins, Harding extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 9-1 overall record, including a perfect 3-0 in conference play. Their next action is a nonconference game Tuesday at home against Arkansas-Monticello.
