Series Victors: Bisons Batter Statesmen to Win Game Three

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Winning one game in a series at Delta State's Harvey Stadium is difficult for opposing teams. Taking a series against the Statesmen will raise eyebrows in the Division II baseball world.

Harding and Delta State split a double header Friday, but the Bisons bashed their way to a series victory with 13 hits and outstanding pitching in a 10-3 victory over the Statesmen on Saturday. It was Harding's first ever series victory at Delta State.

Two Harding errors led to three unearned runs in Delta State's first inning, but the Bisons came right back with three runs in the top of the second.

Sebastian Martinez, who led Harding with six RBIs in the series, drove in two in the inning with a bases-loaded single. Cooper Newsom's RBI single tied the game at 3-3.

The Bisons busted the game wide open in the fourth, scoring six times on six hits, sending 10 hitters to the plate. All six hits in the inning were singles, the big one coming from Drew McNeel that scored two. Michael Dewald had the sixth hit and scored McNeel to give the Bisons a 9-3 lead.

Dewald had another RBI single in the sixth to give Harding its final margin.

Davis Welch (1-0) had one of the best outings of his career on the mound. He yielded only three unearned runs on six hits over six innings with just one walk and seven strikeouts. All six hits he allowed were singles.

Griffin Meeker, a junior transfer from Motlow State Community College, entered in the seventh and continued Operation Shutdown. He blanked the Statesmen for three innings with three strikeouts for his first save.

Harding had five hitters with multi-hit games, led by Dewald who went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. It was Dewald's first career four-hit game.

Harding looks to carry the momentum from the series road win into its home opener next weekend against Southwest Baptist. Check HardingSports.com for double header start times.
