Baseball Bisons Battle Back Twice Before Falling at Central Regional

JOPLIN, Mo. – Saturday with its season on the line, the Harding baseball team came from behind and came from behind and then came up just short.

After rallying twice to tie, Harding could not overcome a three-run homer from Missouri Southern in the eighth inning and fell 10-7. The Bisons were eliminated from the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament and had their season end with a 37-19 record, the second-best win total in program history.

A two-run homer from Missouri Southern in the bottom of the first put the Lions ahead.

Despite having five hits in the first two innings, Harding scored only once with Missouri Southern turning double plays in both innings.

Harding tied the game for the first time at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a two-run Drew McNeel double. Missouri Southern answered with four in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead.

Coulton Doyle's three-run homer in the fifth pulled Harding back to within a run. It was his eighth of the season.

The Bisons battled back to tie it for the second time in the top of the eighth. McNeel doubled for the second time in the game and came in to knot the game at 7-7 on Ty Kirkbride's single to right.

A three-run homer from Missouri Southern in the bottom of the eighth left Harding to make a third come-from-behind attempt. This one was not to be. The Bisons went down in order in the top of the ninth.

Harding head coach Dr. Patrick McGaha shuffled through five different Bison pitchers Saturday. Most effective was Javier Lobo, who held the Lions scoreless for 3 2/3 innings. He tied his career high with five strikeouts and threw a season-high 73 pitches while keeping the Bisons in the game. He ended his season with a 7-2 record and a team-best 2.56 ERA.

Michael Dewald and McNeel both had three hits, and Doyle drove in three runs.

Collin Helms, who missed the season's last 21 games with an injury, led the team with a .344 batting average. Helms and Sebastian Martinez had a team-high nine home runs, and Martinez paced the Bisons with 47 RBIs.
