TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — The Harding Bisons men's soccer team survived a barrage of corner kicks and held off Northeastern State for more than 82 minutes, clinging to a scoreless draw against their conference rivals. But just as the clock seemed ready to guarantee a tie, RiverHawks forward Carter Adams broke the deadlock, striking in the 83rd minute to hand Harding a 1-0 loss Wednesday night.
The late, unassisted goal by Adams at the 82:37 mark was the only score of the night, dropping the Bisons to 0-3-0 in conference play and 2-6-1 overall.
Harding goalkeeper Caden Morris, making just his second start of the season and fourth career start, was strong in net, recording two saves. His play helped withstand immense pressure from Northeastern State (4-3-2, 1-2-0), which held a commanding 12-1 advantage in corner kicks for the match, including nine in the first half alone.
Morris's first-half save came against a shot by Joshua Ademyemi in the 23rd minute.
Offensively, the Bisons were outshot 13-8, managing only three shots on goal.
Romario Castro got Harding's first shot on target in the 35th minute. Robert Garcia Gomez added another strike on goal in the 72nd minute, and substitute Brayden Gallagher tested the keeper late with a shot in the 86th minute. However, Northeastern State goalkeeper Cameron McColloch saved all three attempts to secure the clean sheet.
Gomez led the Bisons with two shots total. Freshman Loveveer Kullar earned his first start of the season in the midfield.
The loss marks the Bisons' third consecutive conference defeat as they look to turn their season around in their next contest, Thursday at Fort Hays State in Hays, Kansas.
