HU Baseball Completes Sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma with 12-7 Victory

SHERMAN, Texas — Harding wrapped up a three-game sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, defeating the Rangers 12-7 behind a clutch grand slam from Cooper Newsom.

Newsom's seventh-inning blast broke a 5-5 tie and ignited a six-run explosion that propelled the Bisons to victory. With the bases loaded and two outs, Newsom launched a towering home run to left field, clearing the bases and sending the Harding dugout into a frenzy.

The grand slam was the highlight of a big comeback for the Bisons, who trailed 5-3 after three innings. Harrison Griffith's solo home run in the fourth cut the lead to 5-3, and Nathan Bowie's RBI single in the sixth trimmed the deficit to 5-4. Coulton Doyle's RBI double in the seventh tied the game at 5-5, setting the stage for Newsom's heroics.

Harding added three more runs in the eighth, including a solo homer from Doyle, to seal the victory. Northwestern Oklahoma scored two runs in the ninth, but it was too little, too late.

Harding starter Preston Tabor pitched four innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Kyle Lane (1-0) earned the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings and giving up no hits while striking out two. Javier Lobo also pitched in relief, tossing two innings and allowing two runs on four hits.

Northwestern Oklahoma State's Chad Green had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Connor Green also had two hits and an RBI.

The Rangers used six pitchers, with starter Colby Mitchell allowing three runs on four hits in four innings. Jacob Wiltshire took the loss in relief, pitching two innings and giving up three runs on three hits.

With the sweep, Harding improves to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in Great American Conference play. Northwestern Oklahoma State falls to 7-4 overall and 0-3 in conference.

Harding is scheduled to play a nonconference game against Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday in Searcy, weather permitting.
