De Carvalho's Record Throw Highlights Day One at NCAA Indoors

INDIANAPOLIS — Harding's Kelmen de Carvalho made history Thursday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, posting the top heptathlon shot put mark in Division II history.

De Carvalho's throw of 15.97 meters (52 feet, 4.75 inches) led the field and highlighted a strong opening day for the junior. He also competed in the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.10 seconds for 847 points.

In the long jump, de Carvalho leaped 6.65 meters (21 feet, 9.75 inches) for 732 points. He cleared 1.68 meters (5 feet, 6 inches) in the high jump for 528 points.

De Carvalho currently sits seventh overall in the heptathlon with 2,956 points. The heptathlon competition concludes Friday.

Also on Thursday, Harding freshman Olaolu Olatunde broke his own school record in the 60-meter dash first round. His time of 6.67 broke his record of 6.68 and qualified him for Saturday's 60-meter dash final.
