No. 13 Bisons Split Doubleheader with Henderson State

SEARCY — No. 13 Harding split a doubleheader with Henderson State on Friday, dropping the first game 4-1 before bouncing back with a 10-6 victory in the second game.

In the opener, Maddox Long struck out nine and allowed only one earned runs but took the loss for the Bisons, falling to 5-1 on the season.

Harding's offense was limited to just four hits, with Harrison Griffith driving in the Bisons' lone run with a sacrifice fly.

Reese Weaks earned the win for Henderson State, pitching six strong innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run. Payton Byrd picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching two scoreless innings in relief.

In the second game, the Bisons exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the first inning, highlighted by Nathan Bowie's two-run double. Cooper Newsom had a two-run homer in the third inning, his second of the season.

Merritt Jay earned the win for Harding, allowing four earned runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Seth Johnson retired the last batter of the game for his first save.

The Reddies fought back with three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bisons' early lead.

Newsom finished with three RBIs, while Bowie drove in two runs. Coulton Doyle and Ty Kirkbride also had RBIs for Harding.

The split leaves the Bisons at 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the Great American Conference. Harding remains atop the GAC standings and has a 1 1/2-game lead over second place Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Arkansas.
