Southern Arkansas Edges Harding 5-3 in GAC Showdown

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – In a highly anticipated matchup between the top two teams in the Great American Conference, Southern Arkansas edged out Harding 5-3 in the first game of a three-game conference series. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Monday, starting at 1 p.m.
Harding, currently 26-9 overall and 16-6 in the GAC, holds the top spot in the conference. Southern Arkansas trails by one game, sitting at 22-13 overall and 15-7 in the GAC.
The game got off to a strong start for Southern Arkansas, scoring a run off Harding's Maddox Long (8-2) in the first inning. However, Harding quickly responded with two runs in the top of the second, capitalizing on Southern Arkansas ace Jeremy Adorno. A bases-loaded walk by Sawyer Price scored the first run, and Coulton Doyle's groundout with the bases loaded brought home Harrison Griffith for the second run.
Harding extended their lead to 3-1 in the third inning, thanks to Griffith's single that scored Collin Helms, who had walked earlier in the inning. This extended Helms' school-record on-base streak to 48 games.
But the game's momentum shifted in the bottom of the third. Long, uncharacteristically, walked two batters and surrendered his first home run of the season to Jayden Hill, giving Southern Arkansas a 4-3 lead.
Southern Arkansas added another run in the seventh, and Long exited the game after 6 2/3 innings, having allowed five hits and striking out five. Kyle Lane secured the final four outs for the Bisons, including two strikeouts.
Adorno, meanwhile, threw 133 pitches over 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs.
