SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — The Harding University men's track and field team won its fourth straight Great American Conference Championship in Shawnee, Oklahoma, scoring 270.162 points. Oklahoma Baptist was second with 185 points, and Southern Arkansas finished third with 102.5 points. Harding head coach Don Hood received GAC Coach of the Year.
The three-day meet concluded Friday at Oklahoma Baptist.
Harding's men's team had numerous top finishes. Sophomore Olaolu Olatunde won the 100 meters in 10.40 seconds, marking the third consecutive year a Harding athlete has won that event. Freshman Caledon Ruwende won the 200 meters in 20.74 seconds, the fourth straight year Harding has taken the conference title in that race. Ruwende also placed second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.60 seconds. Ruwende became Harding's fifth Most Valuable Player at the GAC Championships, scoring a meet-best 23 points.
In the relays, Harding's team of Hayes Cox, Donald Nwamere, Caledon Ruwende and Olaolu Olatunde won the 4x100-meter relay in 40.34 seconds, the team's third straight conference championship in the event. The 4x400 relay team of Emmanuel Ragira, Samuel Williams, Caledon Ruwende and Derick St. Jean won in 3:13.36, Harding's first conference championship in the event since 1966.
Junior Vlad Malykhin won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.61m, his third straight conference championship. Harding athletes have now won the pole vault for the fifth straight year. Harding dominated the event, scoring 30.66 points with additional top finishes from sophomore Everett Mumme (second, 5.05m), junior Kylor Aguilar (third, 4.90m), senior Zalen Robinson (fifth, 4.75m), and sophomore Isaac Hodges (seventh, 4.45m).
Senior Lukas Stiper won the discus with a throw of 54.88m, the sixth time a Harding athlete has won the GAC discus title and the second straight. Harding also took second in the discus (senior Spencer Helms, 54.80m) and third (junior Kelmen de Carvalho, 53.36m), scoring 30 points in the event.
Junior Yves Bilong won the triple jump with a mark of 15.53 meters, his second consecutive GAC championship in the event.
