No. 31 Bisons Fall Just Short in Top-35 Battle at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Despite a strong start in doubles play, the No. 31-ranked Harding men's tennis team could not hold off a singles rally from No. 27 Midwestern State, falling 4-2 on Friday morning at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Bisons (8-3) earned the doubles point to take an early lead, but the Mustangs (5-3) claimed four of the five completed singles matches to secure the regional victory.

Harding opened the match with a statement at No. 1 doubles, where the No. 3-ranked tandem of Adrian Solorzano and Cian Mikkelsen cruised to a 6-1 victory over Cesar Loeches Llamas and Bruno Sanchez. After Midwestern State took the win at the No. 2 spot, the Bisons' No. 26-ranked pair of Sebastian De Las Salas and Edoardo D'Arrigo clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.

In singles play, Midwestern State quickly evened the score at 1-1 with a win at the No. 3 position. The Mustangs then took their first lead of the day following a tight battle at No. 4, where Harding's Jan Alexander Has pushed Juan David Duque to a first-set tiebreaker before falling 7-6, 6-4.

Harding fought back at No. 6 singles, as Florian Gayme rallied from a first-set deficit. After dropping the opener 6-4, Gayme dominated the second set 6-1 before falling in a decisive 6-1 third set.

No. 71 Sebastian De Las Salas kept Harding's hopes alive at No. 2 singles. He battled through a grueling first-set tiebreaker to win 7-6 and followed it up with a 6-4 second set to pull the Bisons within striking distance.

The match was decided at the top flight. Adrian Solorzano, ranked No. 59 in the nation, took the opening set 6-4 against No. 8 Germano Setti. However, Setti responded with 6-3 and 6-2 wins in the final two sets to clinch the overall match for the Mustangs.

At the time the match was clinched, the No. 5 singles flight featuring Caleb Folse was in a third-set battle and went unfinished.

Harding remains in the region for another high-stakes matchup tomorrow. The Bisons travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, to take on No. 16 Washburn at 1:00 p.m. in a neutral-site contest.
