CLINTON, Miss. – Senior Adrian Solorzano earned a dominant top-flight singles victory, but No. 41 Harding could not overcome a strong start from No. 13 Mississippi College, falling 6-1 on Thursday at the MC Tennis Complex.
The loss moves the Bisons to 9-6 overall as they continue their spring break road swing through the Gulf South Conference.
How it Happened
The Choctaws (12-4) gained the early momentum by securing the doubles point. While the Harding tandem of Florian Gayme and Jan Alexander Has turned in a sharp performance at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 win over Joshua Hinton and Charles Lefort, Mississippi College answered on the other two courts.
At the No. 1 spot, Harding's third-ranked duo of Solorzano and Cian Mikkelsen battled to a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-5) to MC's Matias Ruiz and Mattia Ricci. A 7-5 win at the No. 3 position allowed the Choctaws to take the 1-0 lead into singles play.
Solorzano provided the highlight for the Bisons in singles. Competing at the No. 1 position, the senior from Morlia, Mexico, dispatched Mattia Ricci in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. The victory was Solorzano's 11th singles win of the season and his second consecutive win over a top-flight opponent.
Despite Solorzano's quick point, Mississippi College proved too much across the rest of the lineup. The Choctaws claimed the remaining five singles matches in straight sets to seal the victory. Sebastian De Las Salas pushed No. 38-ranked Matias Ruiz at the No. 2 spot before falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), while Caleb Folse and Jan Alexander Has were also competitive in second-set tiebreakers at No. 3 and No. 4.
