BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Junior Dennis Staykov carded a 1-under par 71 on Monday to climb into third place individually, leading the No. 19 Harding Bisons during the second round of the Great American Conference Men's Golf Championships at Forest Ridge Golf Club.
As a team, the Bisons showed a five-stroke improvement over their opening round, posting a 7-over 295. Harding sits in a tie for fourth place with Northwestern Oklahoma State at 19-over (595) for the tournament. Arkansas Tech remains the team to beat at 4-over par, holding an 11-stroke lead over second-place Southwestern Oklahoma State (+15).
Staykov was the catalyst for the Bisons' move on Monday. Staykov was rock-solid on the front nine, turning in an even-par 36. He then caught fire on the back nine, carding a 1-under 35 to finish the day at 71. He enters Tuesday's final round at even-par for the tournament, just four strokes off the individual lead.
The biggest turnaround of the day came from William Pulley. After an opening-round 80, Pulley bounced back with a 1-over 73 on Monday. He played his front nine in even-par 36 and finished strong to climb 17 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 31st.
Junior Jose Arzu remained consistent, carding a 2-over 74 to move into 14th place at 5-over for the tournament. Senior Jose Manuel Peralta shot a 77 and is currently tied for 20th (+7), while Austin Bibb also carded a 77 to sit in 38th place.
While Arkansas Tech has built a double-digit lead, the Bisons remain within striking distance of the runner-up spot, trailing SWOSU by just four strokes and Southern Arkansas by three.
The final round is set to begin Tuesday morning as the Bisons look to make a final push for a top-three finish and bolster their resume heading into the NCAA postseason.
