SURPRISE, Ariz. — The historic 2026 campaign for the Harding men's tennis team is headed to the desert.
Fresh off the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, the No. 35-ranked Bisons will arrive in Arizona as the No. 14 seed in the NCAA Division II National Championship. Harding (17-7) is set to face a formidable challenge in the opening round, drawing No. 3 seed Lubbock Christian on Wednesday, May 20.
First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. in Searcy) at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
A Different Look
While these two programs met earlier this season on Feb. 22—a match Lubbock Christian won 6-1—fans should expect a vastly different script on Wednesday.
When the teams first squared off, the Bisons were shorthanded, playing without ace Adrian Solorzano. Since then, Solorzano has been named the ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year and has anchored a lineup that recently swept through the Central Regional.
Furthermore, Harding head coach Craig Kirchgessner's adjustments mean that not a single Bison will be playing in the same singles flight as they did in the February meeting. With a revamped lineup and the return of their top-ranked senior, Harding enters the "Sweet 16" as a much more dangerous underdog than their seed might suggest.
The Road to the Desert
Harding punched its ticket to Surprise with a clinical 4-0 sweep of Nebraska-Kearney in Searcy last week. The Bisons are making their 14th appearance in the national tournament, but this is the first time the program has advanced past the regional rounds to compete at the final site.
Lubbock Christian enters the tournament as the South Central Region #1 winner and one of the favorites to contend for the title. The Chaps are part of a powerhouse field that includes top-seeded Barry and No. 2 West Florida.
Elite Company
The Bisons aren't the only MIAA representatives in the field. Rival Washburn also advanced to Arizona as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 Ferris State on Wednesday afternoon.
Should the Bisons pull the upset over the Chaps, they would advance to the National Quarterfinals on Thursday, May 21 against the winner of No. 6 Flagler and No. 11 Queens (NY)
