SEARCY – Harding University senior Troy Keith pitched the sixth no-hitter in Bison baseball history Saturday at Jerry Moore Field to lead Harding to a 5-0 victory in game one of a doubleheader with Alabama-Huntsville. UAH won the second game 5-4 in dramatic fashion.
Keith, a native of Magnolia, Ark., allowed just three walks and struck out three in picking up his first win of the season. Only one Charger batter reached second base, and that was in the seventh and final inning. It was Harding's first no-hitter since the Bisons threw two in one season in 2004.
Freshman catcher Erin McCarver provided much of the offense for Harding (2-6) in game one. McCarver's two-out, two-run single in the first gave the Bisons the lead. He added his third RBI of the game in third inning on a ground out that scored Jason Nappi from third. Anthony Guglielmi had a run-scoring single in the inning, and Will McDonald drove in the final run with a single in the sixth.
Keith (1-2) threw 90 pitches in the no-hitter, 50 for strikes. It was his first career shutout. Dustin Bryant (0-1) took the loss for the Chargers. He started and lasted five innings and gave up four earned runs on four hits.
Harding fell behind 4-1 in game two after Alabama-Huntsville (3-3) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning off Bison starter Patrick Nappi (0-2).
The Bisons battled back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Guglielmi had an RBI single, and McDonald added a run-scoring double. UAH scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh off Bison reliever Tyler Billen that made the score 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jason Nappi singled in Chase Presley to bring the Bisons within one. Harding loaded the bases with two outs but could not score, as UAH closer Dan Lazzaroni earned his second save with a strikeout to end the game.
Harding had eight hits in game two, with Presley, Nappi and Guglielmi picking up two each.
Patrick Nappi went four innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits. Billen pitched the last three innings and gave up three hits and one unearned run.
The two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday with the start time moved up an hour to noon in an effort to get the games in before tomorrow's forecasted rain.
