Chargers Cash In: UAH Sweeps Baseball Bisons

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama-Huntsville jumped out to a insurmountable lead in game one and hit a game-winning home run in game two to sweep Sunday's doubleheader against Harding at Charger Park. The Chargers won the opener 13-7 and game two 5-4.

The teams split the four-game series. Harding won Saturday's games 4-3 and 11-8.

Alabama-Huntsville (8-4) scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings of the opener and had a 13-0 lead after five innings. Harding (6-3) made it interesting in the six by scoring seven times, its second seven-run inning this season.

Junior Chase Presley and sophomore pinch-hitter Kevin Ganus both had two-run singles in the inning. Harding went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Jeremy Bohnett went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. He was only Bison with more than one hit.

Alabama-Huntsville had 12 hits off four Harding pitchers. Four Chargers had multiple hits, led by senior Jordan Parker, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior Grant DeBruin was 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBI and his first home run of the season.

Harding senior starter Brodie Brumley (0-1), making only his second start after returning from Tommy John elbow surgery, lasted just 1 2/3 innings and allowed eight earned runs.

UAH senior Dustin Bryant (3-1) earned the win, striking out eight in five innings and allowing five earned runs.

Harding led 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of game two. Sophomore right-hander Lucas Waddell pitched his second strong outing, allowing only three runs (two earned) over six innings. He struck out four and only walked one.

Freshman Bronson Smith (1-1) came on to pitch for the Bisons in the bottom of the seventh. Smith struck out the first batter, but Charger pinch-hitter Ben Carr reached on a Harding error. Freshman Blake Massey then ended the game with a two-run, game-winning home run to left-center field.

The Bisons broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth, scoring an unearned run when the Chargers' committed an error on Bohnett's ground ball that allowed Anthony Guglielmi to score from third.

Harding scored two runs in the third on a two-run Bohnett double that tied the game at 3-3. Bohnett and Guglielmi both went 2-for-4 in game two.

Byne Gooden (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Chargers with three innings of one-hit relief. He struck out two and did not walk anyone.

Harding returns to Jerry Moore Field on Tuesday for a noon doubleheader against Crowley's Ridge College. The games will be the first of the season for Crowley's Ridge.
