HU Men's Basketball Victorious in GAC Opener

Box Score SEARCY – Harding senior Zach Roddenberry scored 32 points and the Bisons controlled the paint in an 80-67 victory over Southern Nazarene on Saturday in Great American Conference play at Rhodes Field House.

Harding (6-0, 1-0) won its GAC opener for the second straight season and opened the season with six straight victories for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Southern Nazarene (3-3, 0-2) is in its first season in the GAC and is still looking for its first conference victory.

Roddenberry scored 16 points in both halves. He shot 11-of-15 from the field and made 10-of-12 free throws. It was his third career 30-point game and the most points by a Harding player this season.

Harding had 11 offensive rebounds to only four for Southern Nazarene, and the Bisons outscored the Crimson Storm 15-0 on second-chance points.

Harding scored the final six points of the first half and led 43-31 at halftime. Tony Cochran made a 3-pointer, and the run continued with an Andraz Kavas layup and a Bradley Spencer free throw, and Harding carried its largest lead of the half into the break.

The Crimson Storm cut the Bisons' lead to nine points twice early in the second half, but a free throw by Spencer at the 4:10 mark capped a 10-2 run that gave Harding a 19-point lead at 74-55.

Spencer scored 17 points and led the Bisons with nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. He left the game late in the second half with an injured ankle.

Cochran came off the bench and scored 12 points for the Bisons, and Kavas added nine points and four rebounds.

Ryan Aaron led Southern Nazarene with 25 points.

The Crimson Storm shot 50 percent from the field but made only 3-of-13 3-pointers. The Bisons made a season-low five 3-pointers, three from Spencer and two by Cochran.

Harding will play its first road game of the season next Thursday. The Bisons will take on East Central in GAC action in Ada, Okla. The Tigers lost 75-64 at Henderson State on Saturday and are 0-2 in conference play.
