Baseball Bisons Split Doubleheader with Christian Brothers

Billy Ninemire had the game-winning hit in Harding's 3-2 victory in game two.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEARCY – Harding baseball split a pair of one-run games with Christian Brothers on Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field. The Bisons lost game one 9-8 before winning game two 3-2 in very unusual fashion.

Harding's record moved to 22-16 and Christian Brothers is 10-24.

In the second game, Harding trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. With one out, Harding's James Anderson hit an infield popup that was dropped by Christian Brothers second baseman Josh Hopkins. Kyler Offenbacker came on to pinch run and moved to second when Ryan Modglin walked.

Harding's Gabe Fyock then hit another infield popup that was again dropped by Hopkins. Christian Brothers right fielder Cody Warren picked up the ball and threw to second to try to force out Modglin, but his throw sailed into left field. Offenbacker scored on the wild throw to tie the game. The Buccaneers then chose to intentionally walk Chase Presley, and Billy Ninemire made then pay with a line drive single to center that scored Modglin with the winning run.

Harding reliever Andrew Fiddler (3-3) pitched the top of the seventh and struck out two to earn the win in relief of Bison starter Alex Smith. Smith allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings and struck out three.

Christian Brothers reliever Jon-Michael Davis (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing no earned runs. None of the three runs Harding scored in game two were earned. Modglin scored Harding's first run in the third with the benefit of two passed balls by starting catcher Charles Armour.

Harding trailed throughout in game one after Buc leftfielder Will Wilson hit a grand slam in the second inning off Modglin, Harding's starting pitcher.

The Bisons trailed 8-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but tied the game with four runs. Presley's bases-loaded triple that cleared the bases was the key hit. He then scored on a single by Ninemire.

Despite the Harding comeback, Christian Brothers pulled ahead again in the eighth on an RBI single by Mac Cooley with the bases loaded off Harding reliever Bronson Smith (1-1).

Cooley (1-3) allowed all four Harding runs in the seventh but earned the win. Drew Tatum pitched the eighth for his first save.

Harding is back in action at Jerry Moore Field on Saturday and Sunday, when it hosts Arkansas Tech in Great American Conference play. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon, and Sunday's game is at 1 p.m.
