JONESBORO, Ark. – Harding senior forward Montana Lewis scored 18 points and sophomore Correy Moyer added 14 as the Lady Bisons opened the season with an exhibition game against NCAA Division I Arkansas State on Monday.
Aundrea Gamble, the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, led all players with 28 points, and Arkansas State used an early second-half run to pull away and win 85-81.
Harding, the 2014 Great American Conference regular season champions, open the regular season on Friday at 5:30 p.m., against Christian Brothers at the Rhodes Field House.
Harding pulled within 42-41 on a Moyer 3-pointer with 17:43 left. Arkansas State answered with a 13-4 run over the next three minutes and led 55-45 on a Gamble layup. The Red Wolves led by as many as 17 with 4:22 left in the game, but Harding closed the game on a 15-3 run, scoring six points in the game's final 40 seconds.
The Lady Bisons outscored the Red Wolves 47-44 in the second half.
Arkansas State scored the game's first eight points, and Harding trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half. Gamble made a 3-pointer with 6:09 left in the half and gave the Red Wolves a 33-22 lead.
Harding scored the next 11 points with freshman Sydney Layrock hitting a 3-pointer during the run and Lewis scoring on a driving layup to tie the game at 33-33 with 2:14 left.
Arkansas State closed the half on an 8-1 run and led 41-34 at halftime.
Harding shot 47 percent from the field and made 19-of-25 free throws. Arkansas State shot 48 percent and made 19-of-30 at the free throw line.
Harding freshmen Sydney Layrock and Lundon Williams each scored nine points. The Lady Bisons had four players foul out of the game.
