SEARCY – The No. 15 Harding women used a balanced attack and 13-point advantage at the free-throw line to defeat Christian Brothers 70-56 on Friday in their season opener at the Rhodes Field House. It was Harding's 11th straight victory in season openers and was the third straight time the Lady Bisons have opened the season with a victory over Christian Brothers.
Despite a relatively poor shooting night from the field, the Lady Bisons shot 26-of-35 at the free throw line to maintain a comfortable lead through much of the second half. Christian Brothers (0-1) made 13-of-17 free throws.
Sophomore Correy Moyer, a transfer from Texas State, had an outstanding Harding debut. Moyer scored 16 points and made 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Senior Arielle Saunders added 13 points and 14 rebounds for her 26th career double-double. Freshman guard Falan Miller scored 11 in her Harding debut, hitting two 3-pointers.
Harding (1-0) shot 36 percent from the field, but had seven players score five points or more. Christian Brothers shot 37 percent and was led by sophomore Emily Reeves' 12 points.
Harding used a 12-2 points-in-the-paint advantage in the first half to pull out to a 34-25 halftime lead.
The Lady Bisons extended their lead to as many as 22 points with just over seven minutes left in the game.
Harding will host Cameron of the Division II Lone Star Conference on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
