CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico's John Gilliam hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Greyhounds a 76-73 victory over Harding on Saturday at the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic.
The ending was all too familiar for the Bisons, who lost 81-80 to West Texas A&M on Friday on a 3-pointer with five seconds left.
Harding (3-3) will return to Great American Conference action Thursday when they travel to Southern Arkansas in Magnolia.
Neither team ever led by more than nine points, and the game was tied nine times, including twice in the final minute.
A layup by Harding's Andraz Kavas, who scored a career-high 33 points, tied the game at 71-71 with 48 seconds left. Gilliam made a layup to put the Greyhounds back on top, but Kavas hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining.
West Texas A&M dribbled to half court and called timeout with seven seconds left. Gilliam caught the in-bounds pass and hit the game-winner from almost 30 feet.
Kavas, who also had 10 rebounds and his second double-double of the season, shot 12-of-20 from the field and 8-of-9 at the free-throw line. Junior Will Francis made four 3-pointers and 11-of-12 free throws for a season-high 23 points.
Gilliam led Eastern New Mexico (4-3) with 21 points.
Harding weathered an early 14-2 Eastern New Mexico run, and despite missing its first 11 3-pointers, trailed only 39-37 at halftime. The Bisons were 9-of-13 from inside the arc and made 13-of-15 free throws to keep the game close.
Kavas and Francis combined to score 32 of Harding's 37 first-half points. Kavas made 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 free throws and had 18 points. Francis hit Harding's first two 3-pointers of the half and made all eight free-throw attempts and had 14 points.
