BOLIVAR, Mo. - For the second time this season, No. 33 Harding men's tennis needed a victory from junior
Caleb McReynolds in his singles match to clinch a 5-4 victory. And for the second time, McReynolds came through with a three-set victory. Friday that 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 5 singles gave Harding a 5-4 triumph over No. 35 Southwest Baptist after the Bisons fell behind 4-0 and responded with five straight singles wins.
The victory was Harding's first against a nationally-ranked team since records began in 2002-03.
Harding improved to 5-2 overall, while Southwest Baptist, an NCAA Tournament team last season, fell to 3-3.
Harding lost all three doubles matches for only the second time this season. When freshman
Yann Le Mat fell in straight sets at No. 2 singles, things looked bleak for the Bisons.
Then freshman
Mathaus Spiering defeated Kristof Kinal, the No. 35 singles player in Division II, by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and the comeback was on.
Jon Mark Rowden made it 4-2 when he defeated Christian Blodig 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Harding pulled within one point when
Brandon Hogland won 6-3, 7-5 over Daniel Cardona at No. 4 singles.
Harding tied the match with
Germans Uglovs' 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles that set up McReynolds heroics at No. 5.
After losing the first set, McReynolds responded by winning the final two over Guido Margiotta. McReynolds, who clinched the winning point in Harding's 5-4 victory over Delta State earlier in the season, won the third-set tiebreaker 7-1 for his fifth straight singles victory.
Harding will look to make it two straight against ranked opponents Saturday when it takes on No. 27 Drury, who is undefeated at 6-0.
