ADA, Okla. – East Central came from behind to defeat Harding in both games of a doubleheader Friday at Tiger Field in Great American Conference action. The Tigers won the opener 7-5 and took game two 8-6. The teams conclude the series Saturday at noon in Ada.
Harding (12-7, 5-3) led 4-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning in game one, but East Central (10-9, 6-5) scored four in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-4 lead.
Harding's Zac Stewart hit his second home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to cut East Central's lead to two runs. Matt Calhoun then hit his second double of the game, and Erin McCarver reached on a hit-by-pitch to send the go-ahead run to the plate in James Anderson. An outstanding defensive play by East Central first baseman Nick Spini on Anderson's line drive ended the game.
Stewart was 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two RBI. Calhoun, Anderson, and Victor Guerra had two hits each for Harding.
East Central reliever Oscar Gomez (2-0) earned the win. He pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of Tiger starter Lucas Caplan. Andrew Fiddler (1-3) allowed three runs in one inning of relief and took the loss for Harding. Senior Cameron Walker started for the Bisons and went seven innings. He allowed seven hits and four earned runs and struck out seven with no walks.
Calhoun, the reigning GAC Player of the Week continued to pound out hits with a 4-for-4 effort that included his fourth home run of the season in game two. He has five consecutive multi-hit games, and it was his second four-hit game of the season. He is 14-for-20 (.700) during his five-game hitting streak with seven extra-base hits.
Harding led 6-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, but East Central scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.
East Central's Icezack Flemming (3-3) went the distance on the mound for the Tigers. He allowed six runs (four earned) and struck out nine in seven innings. Sophomore Collin Campbell started for Harding and lasted 3 2/3 innings. Reliever Hunter Payne (0-1) allowed three runs in two innings and took the loss.
Harding second baseman Kyler Offenbacker went 2-for-3 with two RBI, his first multi-hit game of the season. He drove in the Bisons' first runs with a two-run single in the second. Calhoun accounted for Harding's other four runs. He had a two-run home run in the third and a two-run double in the fourth.
