Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Scott Goode (1/28/16)

Harding Men's Basketball Remains Tied for First with 84-64 Victory over Northwestern Oklahoma

SEARCY – The formula of shoot well and play great perimeter defense worked again for Harding men's basketball Thursday as the Bisons used that combination to defeat Northwestern Oklahoma 84-64 before a crowd of 1,046 at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

The victory was the seventh in the last eight games for the Bisons (11-6) and kept them in a first-place tie with Ouachita Baptist for the lead in the Great American Conference.

Harding, the GAC leader in field-goal percentage, shot 52 percent from the field, its sixth time this season over 50 percent. The Bisons also limited the Rangers to only 2-of-20 from 3-point range. Harding has held its last three opponents to a combined 8-of-60 (13 percent) from behind the arc.

Harding's scoring came from five players, all of whom scored 13 or more points. Blake McNair made 4-of-5 3-pointers and led the Bisons with 24 points. He also tied for the team lead with 10 rebounds. Senior Jacob Gibson had 16 points and six rebounds, and junior Will Francis had 16 points and seven assists. Sophomore Reggie Anthony scored 15 points, and junior Stefan Andelkovic had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Reserve guard Zach Dumas led Northwestern with 21 points, hitting 8-of-14 free throws.

Harding led by as many as 10 in the first half. Gibson made two free throws to give Harding a 27-17 lead at the 5:56 mark. The Bisons held a 36-31 advantage at halftime.

Harding scored the first five points of the second half, and Northwestern (5-11, 5-7) got no closer than seven points. The Bisons led by as many as 22 late in the game.

TEAM STATS
Harding held Northwestern to only 34 percent shooting, the second-lowest figure by a Bison opponent this season and the fifth time an opponent has been below 40 percent.

Harding had twice as many assists as Northwestern (16-8) but had a season-high 19 turnovers.

Harding outscored Northwestern 38-28 in the paint and 21-9 off turnovers.

INDIVIDUAL STATS
McNair has scored in double figures in five straight games and has more than 20 points for the third time this season. He has made multiple 3-pointers in 12 consecutive games. McNair also had 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

McNair's four 3-pointers gave him 159 in his career and moved him past Darren McCrillis (156, 2000-04) and Lonnie Smith (158, 2004-06) into fourth place on Harding's career 3-point list.

Francis had seven assists, the seventh time in the last eight games he has had five or more assists.

Gibson's 16 points gives him double-figure scoring in seven of Harding's last eight games. He needs four points in Saturday's game to become the 36th Harding player with 1,000 career points.

Stefan Andelkovic had his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
